Last year, we lived in Minas Gerais, Brasil for five months. I (Carole) was on a Fulbright to study early colonial choral music and Tadeu was doing his own research on play and flow while we both taught improvisation at the Universidade Federal de São João del Rei (UFSJ). We had the pleasure of performing several concerts and teaching classes in São Paulo, Tatuí, Belo Horizonte, and São João del Rei. One that stands out in my memory is performing in São João at Solar da Baronesa.
The building is an old colonial mansion with an art gallery/performing space on the first floor. It is a cultural center as well as an outlet for UFSJ. We performed parts of Burning Bright with Blake’s images projected on the wall behind us and parts of Latino Voices. The images here were taken by one of our improvisation students, Ruzza Bruzo.
